Here is the description of the character:

A a tall and suave ex-motorcycle racing champion in mid 20th Century Virginia, is blinded in his decision making process by an overwhelming sense of personal pride. While becoming a young local legend in his early 20’s on the dirt racetrack on the outskirts of town, Clayton begins to fall for a young high school drop out, Abigale, who is a new waitress at the local diner. While being a non-factor for Clayton, the waitress is a black women and is incredibly reluctant in being courted by Clayton.

Being the early 1950’s below the Mason-Dixon line, the prideful Clayton is challenged for the first time to sway a woman, which has thus far been as easy as flashing his “#1” racing bib. After on-again, off- again relations with the waitress, Clayton has a horrible near-death accent on the racetrack that leaves a ghastly scar above his right temple that impacts his vision drastically.

This sparks the waitress to tell Clayton the news that she is pregnant with hers’ and Clayton’s child. We meet Clayton 5 years after his career ending accident and on the eve of his daughters fifth birthday.
