SCENE 2 – MANAGER’S OFFICE
Two managers sit behind a desk. Sarah and an actor, JOHN,
act in front, mid-scene. He’s melodramatic but hot.
John grabs Sarah and kisses, hard. Sarah pushes off.
SARAH
Now get out.
JOHN
You’re one of those women with a lot of
layers, huh?
SARAH
Yes, no, probably.
JOHN
I don’t do layers.
John stomps off. Sarah is left, awkward. John turns back
and plops in a chair, ready for feedback. Sarah sits as
well. John scoots forward. His headshot is in his lap.
Sarah scoots more forward. John meets her.

FIRST MANAGER
My condolences.
Thing is, with the
industry being how it is right now, it’s
hard to take on developmental clients.
JOHN
That’s what my agent was telling me.
SECOND MANAGER
(to John)
You’re an actor, too. Do you
have a manager?
JOHN
Ben Kelly, at Top Management.

SARAH
I mean, you only have one credit.
JOHN
Which I got from pounding the pavement
and doing casting workshops.
SECOND MANAGER
Good for you.
SARAH
Funny story, I got my credits from my
friends who are writers.
SECOND MANAGER
Connections. That’s how you get work in
this town.
JOHN
Um, about connections? They really are
important. My step-father is casting his
new film right now and he was telling me
about how he’s not even auditioning for
it. Just going through old files of
friends and stuff.
SARAH
Your step-dad wrote a film?
JOHN
Yeah. It’s what he does. His name is
Simon Stamson?
SARAH
I didn’t know Simon Stamson was your
father.
JOHN
It’s not that crazy. He’s just my step-
father.
SECOND MANAGER
I read about that! Exciting. How’s it
going?
JOHN
Pretty good. You know how it is–
2.
SARAH
I completely agree with you about
connections. I have a list of all the
casting directors that I’ve built
personal relationships with. Religious
about my note taking…
She reaches into her bag. Manager stops her.
FIRST MANAGER
Oh! No time for that, girlfriend! You
have to remember names.
JOHN
(to Second Manager)
Things are always
frustrating in the beginning though,
aren’t they?
SECOND MANAGER
(pointing to First Manager)
I was just
telling this one that the other day. How
frustrating new talent can be.
John nods. Scoots his chair up.
SECOND MANAGER (CONT’D)
Are you looking for representation as
well?
JOHN
Well, it’s hard. Ben is a big fan of
mine.
SECOND MANAGER
I completely understand. But what if–
SARAH
Those Top contracts are a major pain
though, I heard. Is it two years that you
sign for?
JOHN
Three for me. I’m up in a month.
SARAH
I’m available now. Also, I have a second
scene, if you’d like.
John reaches for his headshot.
JOHN
You never know, you know? I’ll leave this
here and–
